Ni-Cu-Ni Plating Structure & Specification

OSENC uses the stack NdFeB + Ni + Cu + Ni. The first nickel layer supports bonding and protection, copper forms the middle barrier, and the outer nickel layer provides the final smooth silver / semi-bright metallic surface. We control total Ni-Cu-Ni thickness on the product specification and define individual layer data only when the process documentation requires it.

Micro & Precision Nickel Coated Magnets

Selected micro parts can reach the 0.2 mm class, including disc sizes around D0.2 × T0.2 mm and micro block sizes around 0.2 × 0.2 × 0.2 mm. Precision tolerance in the ±0.005–0.020 mm range is reviewed only for selected micro geometries where grinding, plating build and inspection capability support the drawing.

Precision rule: ±0.10 mm remains the standard finished-part tolerance, ±0.05 mm is the precision target for suitable geometries, and tighter micro tolerances are quoted as project-specific precision work.

Grades & Magnetization

NdFeB Grade Range

OSENC Ni-Cu-Ni products cover N35–N56 plus M, H, SH, UH, EH and AH high-temperature families. We select the grade from the required magnetic output, coercivity, geometry and operating temperature.

Magnetization Options

OSENC supports axial, diametrical, radial, multipole and custom magnetization. Disc / ring / cylinder parts can use axial or diametrical directions, while blocks can be magnetized through thickness, length or width.

Process sequence: Ni-Cu-Ni plating is completed before final magnetization. Final inspection then verifies dimensions, surface condition, magnetic performance and pole direction.

Where OSENC Specifies Ni-Cu-Ni

We Specify Ni-Cu-Ni For

  • General industrial and OEM assemblies
  • Indoor and controlled-humidity environments
  • Electronics, sensors, fixtures and normal-handling components
  • Visible parts requiring a smooth silver metallic finish

We Switch to Another Coating For

  • Long-term immersion or permanently wet assemblies
  • Seawater, marine exposure or continuous salt spray
  • Strong corrosive chemicals or aggressive cleaning media
  • Low-friction, non-stick or full-encapsulation requirements
Temperature selection: OSENC selects the finished magnet from the NdFeB grade, geometry, operating point and magnetic circuit. Nickel plating is not used as the finished-magnet temperature rating.

Through Hole, Countersunk & Blind Hole Rules

OSENC machines through holes and countersinks before Ni-Cu-Ni plating so the hole wall, countersunk face and external surfaces enter the plating process together. Finished magnets are not drilled afterward because post-machining breaks the coating and exposes NdFeB.

For deep or blind holes, OSENC defines the required plated depth and acceptance criteria from the actual hole diameter, depth and geometry. The drawing must identify the surfaces that require verified coating coverage.

Countersunk rule: keep at least 1 mm of magnet material outside the major hole edge, and define hole diameter, major diameter, angle and position on the drawing.

How OSENC Prevents Ni-Cu-Ni Coating Failures

Edge Damage

We review fragile corners, countersunk margins and thin sections before plating so protected edges are not designed around avoidable crack or handling risks.

Post-Machining Exposure

We machine holes before plating and do not drill finished Ni-Cu-Ni magnets afterward, preventing exposed NdFeB at the new cut surface.

Deep-Hole Coverage

We define plated depth and inspection requirements for deep or blind holes instead of treating a recessed surface like an open face.

Handling & Packaging

Finished surfaces and packaging protection are checked before shipment to reduce coating damage during transport and assembly.

What OSENC Inspects Before Shipment

Our inspection plan focuses on the finished magnet that reaches your assembly, not only the bare NdFeB core.

OSENC dimensional inspection of nickel plated neodymium magnets with a caliper
Finished DimensionsCritical dimensions are checked after plating against the approved drawing revision.
Surface & Coating CoverageWe inspect finish, damage, exposed substrate and geometry-specific coating coverage.
Magnetic Performance & Pole DirectionMagnetic performance and magnetization direction are verified after final magnetization.
Packaging ProtectionFinished surfaces are protected for transport and downstream handling.
Corrosion-critical projects: OSENC defines the test standard, NaCl concentration, temperature, exposure duration, specimen condition and acceptance criteria before sampling. Sampling level and acceptance criteria are locked to the approved order and inspection plan.

Nickel vs Zinc vs Epoxy vs PTFE

OSENC selects the coating from the actual environment, surface behavior and dimensional requirement.
